“Be Here Now”

An action always has a starting point and a finishing point. Once I set my brush to the paper and start writing a character, the action must be carried on through to the end. There is no pause, no going back, nor any way to re-do something. Regarding completed works, if viewers follow the order of brush strokes with their eyes, they can imagine how my brush moved, from the starting point to its finish, with the flow of time. My artwork, like music and dance, is an art form linked to time. It can be said that the tracks of the brush are the traces of the time.
In Zen, there is a teaching which translates as, “Be here now”. It does no good to regret the unchangeable past, or to feel gloomy about a future which has not yet come. What is important is living “here and now”, with all our strength, where we are.
With this in mind, as evidence of having lived here and now, I hope to connect invisible time to the forms of beauty and crystallize the precious ‘now’ in forms like no other.

Water 2017 Chinese ink on paper

When I swing my brush quickly in the air, the ink splashes on the paper.
When I lay down my brush, the ink slowly begins to spread on the paper.
The spreading or splashing of ink are phenomena of nature.
They are unexpected, and beyond the control of human hands.
But even if they cannot be controlled, this is no reason to exclude them;
rather, I try to positively accept this, and complete my works together with the power of nature.

In the Orient, the word “Nature” indicates the whole of creation, including human beings.
Humans are part of nature – living our lives while respecting it.

Interview by Pierre-Yves Caër Gallery:

31/08/2017
Pierre-Yves Caër Gallery

Pierre-Yves Caër Gallery will open in October 2017. It will be solely dedicated to Japanese contemporary art.
The gallery’s address is 7, rue Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth, in the Marais area, in Paris. It will exhibit abstract and figurative artworks, through various media: paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, ceramics, fabrics…
The works of seven artists, including me, will be shown in solo exhibitions between October 12, 2017 and June 30, 2018. Some of them are already renowned on an international basis, other ones are emerging. All of them have in common to have reached maturity in their art, to have developed their own originality and to refer to Japanese culture in their artworks.

Exhibition “HOMAGE to YU-ICHI by THE 8th TEN-SAKU-KAI”

Yu-ichi Inoue (1916-1985) is a famed calligrapher representing the 20th century. This Exhibition is held by artists who are deeply influenced by Yu-ichi Inoue, exploring to make a new history of calligraphy after him.
It is held once in two year since 2004. The fact that I encountered Yu-ichi’s works in Kyoto in my thirties made me change my career from an architect to an artist.

I’m pleased to inform that the calligraphy documentary “Traces Of The Soul” has released it’s official trailer.

”Traces Of The Soul”

Unlike a text message or e-mail, handwriting is an aspect of a person’s identity. It carries something beyond literal meaning, something of the soul. For thousands of years the unique beauty of the hand-written word has developed and evolved through the art of calligraphy.
“Traces Of The Soul” explores this art form through the eyes of 12 contemporary calligraphers from across the globe.
